Cantata 150: Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, J. S. Bach
The Christ Church Choir will be joined by a period instrument ensemble in this concert of music at the start of Holy Week. Pergolesi's stunning Stabat Mater, scored for women's voices and strings, strikingly depicts Mary, the mother of Jesus, at the foot of the cross at Jesus' crucifixion. Monteverdi's Adoramus te, Christe is an 8-part motet which proclaims with the Church of Good Friday that the Christ's death on the cross redeems the world. Bach’s moving Cantata 150 Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul is mainly a presentation of Psalm 25; Christ himself called upon the psalms of David at the time of his crucifixion. Bach’s Cantata 150 ties us directly to the crucifixion while rooting us firmly in the resurrection.
